Hair loss is affecting millions of people all over the world. There are different reasons why we lose our crowning glory. It can be because of diseases, heredity, ageing, medications, infections and many more. It can even be because of a very simply reason, and that is malnutrition and improper diet.

Nutrition has a key role in hair growth and good nutrition radiates all over your body from your hair down to your toenails. Food is essential for survival, it is necessary for the body to function properly. Eating the right kinds of foods allows your body to make the energy needed to keep your hair healthy and also to keep you from losing your hair.

There are many vitamins and nutrients that your body needs in order to produce healthy hair. If any of these are lacking, your hair shafts can become weak, resulting to massive shedding of hair. The following are good foods that can help fight against hair loss and promote healthy hair growth:

Red meat: Lean red meat is an essential food for prevention of hair loss. It is a good source of iron, which is needed to help create haemoglobin to carry oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. Red met also contains sulphur, which helps keep the hair follicles in good health by decreasing inflammation and improving blood circulation in the scalp, thus helping stop hair loss.

Eggs: Hair is made of keratin and protein. So, a diet rich in protein is one way to encourage hair growth and prevent hair loss. Eggs are a great source of protein and biotin — two essential nutrients to promote a healthy head of hair.

Oats: This food helps prevent hair loss, provides energy and assists in maintaining the natural hair color by aiding the creation of melatin. Oats are a useful source of easily absorbable iron. It also has the side benefit of being a decent source of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.

Brazil nuts are one of nature’s best sources of selenium, an important mineral for the health of your scalp. Walnuts are also a great source of zinc, as are cashews and almonds.

Bean Sprouts: Bean sprouts contain an important nutrient for hair health known as silica and a must on your shopping list for foods that prevent hair loss. The body uses silica to help it absorb vitamins and minerals so even if you’re eating plenty of vitamins but not consuming silica, they might not be helping much. Hair grows from follicles within the skin at the base of the hair root and need nutrients to form new cells and generate healthy hair growth. Silica can also be found in the skin of cucumbers, red peppers and green peppers.

Vegetables: Vegetables like carrots, parsnips, ginger, turnips, onions, winter squash, pumpkin, black pepper and brown rice are good sources of vitamins for hair loss prevention. Dark green vegetables are good sources of iron and calcium which help in hair regrowth.

Fruits: Melons, berries, bananas, oranges, apples and many other fruits can supply your body with the proper vitamins to reduce hair loss.
