Acidophilus for Yeast Infection

yogurt.jpg
Acidophilus is in yogurt

Acidophilus, particularly L. acidophilus, is a probiotic bacteria sometimes added to milk to aid digestion. L. acidophilus is also part of the naturally-occurring bacteria present in the vagina and the digestive system, and when present in normal amounts it helps to control the growth of yeast.

Acidophilus for the Treatment and Prevention of Yeast Infection

Method

  • L. acidophilus may be purchased in supplement form, and should be taken according to package directions. L. acidophilus is also present in yogurt, which is a tasty way to help prevent yeast infections.

Why It Works

Research is rather inconclusive as to whether supplementing your diet with acidophilus actually treats yeast infections, but when naturally present in the body in proper amounts, L. acidophilus does control the growth of yeast.

Precautions

Side effects are very minimal, since this is a naturally-occurring bacteria in the human body, but very large amounts of L. acidophilus may cause minor stomach discomfort.
