Hawthorne for Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are veins that have become tortuous and enlarged. They frequently appear as bluish or purplish swollen veins beneath the surface of the skin. They commonly occur in the lower legs but can appear anywhere on the body (when they affect the veins of the rectum they are referred to as hemorrhoids). Varicose veins occur when the valves within the vein become incompetent, allowing blood to flow backwards and causing affected veins to swell. Varicose veins result from numerous causes. Heredity plays a large role in their development. Obesity, pregnancy, menopause, abdominal straining (such as occurs with constipation), aging and injury to the affected leg may all contribute to the development of varicosities. Varicose veins are more common in women than men. Hawthorne for Varicose Veins

Method

  • Hawthorne (Crataegus) is a large genus of trees and shrubs within the rose family. It grows in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. The trees and shrubs bear small pome fruit.
  • For varicose veins, make a tea by pouring one cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of crushed berries or leaves from the Hawthorne tree.
  • Steep for 20 minutes and drink 3 times a day.
  • Hawthorne is also available as a capsule or liquid extract that can be taken up to 3 times per day.

Why It Works

Hawthorne is thought to relive fluid retention that can cause swelling, improve circulation and strengthen blood vessels. The berries and flowers produced by the Hawthorne genus are rich sources of anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants.

Precautions

Mild side effects may include drowsiness and occasional nausea. Overdose may cause hypotension (low blood pressure) and abnormal heart rhythms. People who have heart disease should use Hawthorne with caution, starting at a low dose.
