Licorice for Stomach Ulcer

Licorice

Licorice is the root of a legume (Glycyrrhiza glabra) native to Asia and southern Europe. While most popularly used to flavor candies all over the world, licorice is also used to flavor colas, teas and medicines. In traditional medicine, licorice has been used for centuries as an expectorant, a laxative, and for mouth ulcers, and has even been used in modern times to treat such serious ailments as viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, and Crohn’s Disease.

Licorice to Treat Stomach Ulcer

Method

  • For best results, use deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), which has the compound responsible for many adverse effects removed. Take 0.4 – 1.6 g of DGL extract three times daily, or chew 300-400 mg of 4:1 DGL extract three times daily 20 minutes before meals.

Why It Works

A main compound in licorice is thought to sooth irritation, reduce inflammation, and to protect the stomach through increased secretion of mucus. Licorice also contains flavonoids, compounds that may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause ulcers.

Precautions

Please consult your healthcare provider if you believe you have a stomach ulcer – licorice is no substitute for proper medical care. Consuming large amounts of licorice can lead to dangerously low levels of blood potassium, high blood pressure, headaches and fatigue. Licorice can also be toxic to the liver and heart in high doses. Pregnant and lactating women should not use licorice. Some adverse drug interactions have been reported when licorice is taken with certain medications, including insulin, aspirin and oral contraceptives. For safety, use licorice under the supervision of your healthcare provider.
