Jamaican Dogwood for Toothache

Jamaican dogwood is a plant native to Central America, Florida and the West Indies, and its bark been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. Perhaps best known for its abilities to treat nerve pain, migraine, anxiety and insomnia, Jamaican dogwood has also been shown to relieve muscle spasms, cough, and inflammation. A known toxin, Jamaican dogwood is often used as a fish poison in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Jamaican Dogwood to Relieve Toothache

Method

  • A tea can be made from the bark by boiling 1 teaspoon bark in water. The tea will need to be strained, and can be taken 3 times daily. Alternatively, 1-2 ml of the tincture may be taken 3 times daily. Do NOT exceed the recommended dosage.

Why It Works

The bark contains compounds that are known pain relievers and anti-inflammatory agents.

Precautions

Jamaican dogwood should not be used by children, the elderly, or pregnant / breastfeeding mothers. Large doses are toxic, and symptoms of poisoning may include nausea, chest pain, tremors, excessive salivation, sweating and numbness. Stop use and contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these symptoms. Do not take Jamaican dogwood if you are taking sedatives.
