Clove plant

Cloves are a spice consisting of the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree in the myrtle family. Particularly popular in Europe and Asia, cloves are used in cigarettes, chai tea, perfume, incense and as a spice in food. Cloves are also used in Indian and Chinese medicine as a painkiller, for digestive problems, and to kill parasitic worms.

Clove to Relieve Toothache

Method

  • Clove oil may be purchased over the counter at pharmacies. Apply directly to the affected area with a clean cotton swab. Clove oil tastes unpleasant, so it is best to avoid the tongue during application.

Why It Works

Clove oil contains a compound called eugenol, which is a natural pain reliever.

Precautions

In large doses, clove oil is toxic and can cause respiratory distress, liver failure and depression of the central nervous system. To avoid a potentially dangerous medical condition, it is best to visit a dental professional when you have a toothache.
