Baking Soda for Teeth Whitening

Arm und Hammer

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has been used for centuries as a cleaner. It will take stains off the teeth in much the same way that it can be used to take stains off a bathtub – by scrubbing them off. Baking soda is safe to use in the mouth, even if you swallow some of it.

Baking soda as a tooth whitener

Method

  • Put toothpaste on a toothbrush, dip the brush into baking soda, and brush your teeth.
  • Alternatively, you can skip the toothpaste and simply brush with baking soda.

Why It Works

Baking soda is very abrasive. It removes stains by scraping them off.

Precautions

Baking soda will damage the teeth, scraping off pieces of enamel, if you use it too often. Always consult a dentist before putting anything into your mouth.
