Tea Bags for Sty

Tea Bag

A sty is a bacterial infection or inflammation of the eyelid resulting from a blocked oil gland. These generally appear as red, painful bumps at the edge of the eyelid, which fill with pus and usually rupture within a few days. Sties may cause sensitivity to light, difficulty opening the eye, blurred vision, and increased tear production. Though treatment may sometimes be needed, sties usually clear up on their own within a week.

Tea Bags to Treat Sty

  • Soak a tea bag in warm water and hold it to the affected eye for 10 minutes (do not press it against the eye.) Repeat three or four times daily.

Why It Works

Tannic acid in the tea kills the bacteria responsible for the sty, and the warmth helps the pus come to a head and drain sooner. Once the pus drains, the sty will clear up.

Use warm, not hot water to prevent burns. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after treatment to help prevent spreading the infection. If the sty persists for more than a week with treatment, contact your healthcare provider.
