Lobelia to Stop Smoking

lobelia.jpg
Lobelia siphilitica

Lobelia is a group of about 400 flowering plants, mostly native to warm and tropical regions. Several species are grown as ornamental plants in gardens, but lobelia has also been used by Native Americans as a laxative and for muscle disorders and respiratory problems. One species in particular, lobelia inflata (Indian tobacco) is now used as a sedative, an expectorant, a diuretic, and to treat food poisoning and asthma.

Lobelia as a Stop Smoking Aid

Method

  • Homeopathic Preparation: Take 10 drops of tincture dissolved in a glass of water three times daily.
  • Previously available smoking cessation products containing lobelia have been banned by the FDA due to ineffectiveness and potentially dangerous side effects.

Why It Works

Lobelia contains a compound that is very similar to nicotine, and like nicotine, it stimulates the central nervous system. Recent evidence suggests that lobelia actually does not help users quit smoking, and the FDA has since banned the sale of smoking products containing lobelia.

Precautions

Most healthcare practitioners DO NOT recommend using lobelia internally for any reason, including as an aid to stop smoking. It has many undesirable side effects, and should absolutely not be used by pregnant women, children, or those with heart-related problems. Please talk to your healthcare provider before considering taking lobelia.
