Strengthen Muscles for Sprains

A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn away from the bone it helps to support (strains are injuries to the muscle rather than a ligament). Sprains are usually caused by overexertion or an injury such as a fall. They can occur in any joint, but affect the ankles and knees more often than other joints. Back strains are also common injuries.

Once a person has suffered a sprain injury to a joint, they may be more prone to reinjure the same joint. This may be due to the fact that the muscles surrounding and helping to support the joint are weakened.

Strengthening Surrounding Muscles to Prevent Sprains

Method

  • Consult your physician or a physiotherapist to ask which exercises can help you to strengthen the muscles surrounding the affected joint to prevent reinjury.
  • Exercises that strengthen core muscles are also important, especially if you have suffered a back injury.
  • Stretching and range of motion exercises may be attempted first, and then more targeted exercises may be added.

Why It Works

Sprains often occur due to weakness of certain muscles that surround and support a joint. By strengthening these muscles, you can help to prevent a sprain from occurring again.

Precautions

Avoid vigorous exercise of an affected joint until it is fully healed. It is a good idea to consult your doctor so that he/she can assess whether the joint has healed fully and can handle the exercise regimen planned. Your physician or physiotherapist will be able to advise you on exercises to perform to strengthen the necessary muscles.
