Buy a New Pair of Shoes for Foot Odor

The Macarony Shoe Maker

Foot odor is caused not so much by sweaty feet, as it is by encasing sweaty feet in an environment where they cannot get any air—the shoes. One option is to wear sandals or open-toed shoes. But in the winter, when it may be too cold for sandals, doctors say that simply alternating shoes each day can help.

Using Baking Soda to Prevent Foot Odor

Method

  • Sprinkle one or two teaspoons of baking soda in your shoes before putting them on.
  • Alternatively, try mixing baking soda with ground dried sage, and let the mixture sit overnight in an airtight glass jar. The next night, sprinkle the mixture into your shoes at night. Use nightly.

Why It Works

It takes a pair of shoes about 24 hours to completely dry after a pair of feet have been wearing them, and sweating in them, all day. Beginning the day with a dry pair of shoes can make a big difference to the ecology of the feet.

Precautions

There are no negative side effects to buying new shoes, other than the expense. However, if foot odor is very severe, you should think about possible causes. Athlete’s foot is a common cause of foot odor and may need to be treated separately. Kidney or liver problems are also sometimes associated with foot odor. If you suspect an underlying health problem may be causing your foot odor, it would be wise to see a doctor or other health practitioner.
