Onion for Scars

Onion

Onion is a root vegetable that has been grown worldwide for thousands of years primarily as a food source. More recently, onion has garnered attention for medicinal purposes, with advocates claiming that onions can prevent cancer, cure the common cold, and help with diabetes, osteoporosis, and other conditions.

Onion as a scar treatment

Method

Onion extract is available in gel form, and may be applied topically 3-4 times a day. It is also the active ingredient in Mederma, a widely-used scar treatment sold over-the-counter.

Why It Works

Onion extract is thought to be an anti-inflammatory, and has been shown to inhibit the overproduction of collagen in scar tissue. This could help minimize the appearance of many types of scars, including those from stretch marks, burns and acne.

Precautions

Research is inconclusive on the effectiveness of onion extract on the prevention of scarring. In more than one study, petroleum jelly has been shown to be at least as effective as onion extract, and is a less costly alternative. Do not use onion extract if you have an allergy to onions.
