Gotu Kola for Scars

Centella asiatica

Gotu Kola is an aquatic plant native to Southeast Asia, South Africa and the South Pacific. It has been used for centuries in many Asian countries, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, for a variety of ailments, including dermatological conditions, respiratory infections, mental problems, and leprosy. Once thought to prolong life, gotu kola is credited in the myth of the 265-year-old Tai Chi Master Li Ching-Yun.

Gotu kola treatment for scars

Method

Apply gotu kola topically in an ointment. For best results, it should be used as soon as possible after the skin damage.

Why It Works

Gotu kola contains several active compounds that have been found to increase blood flow to wounds, inhibit the overproduction of collagen in scar tissue, and improve the strength and elasticity of skin. These compounds also inhibit shrinking of the skin as it heals, and can raise antioxidant levels, promoting the growth of new, healthy skin. These same healing properties aid in the reduction of acne flare-ups, as well as acne scarring.

Precautions

Topical gotu kola can have side effects, including allergic reaction. Most other side effects of the herb occur when it is taken internally, however pregnant and nursing mothers should not use gotu kola, due to risk of miscarriage and lack of sufficient research on its effects on small children. Please consult a doctor if you have scars that bleed or produce any type of discharge.
