Turmeric for Rash Relief

Turmeric

Curcuma longa

Turmeric is a South Asian herb in the ginger family, harvested for its rootstalk. The bright yellow rootstalk is grated or ground and used as a spice in cooking, as a dye, and to color and thicken some foodstuffs. Turmeric is also used for medicinal purposes, particularly for skin wounds, gastrointestinal problems, and as an anti-inflammatory.

Turmeric to soothe rash and itching

Method

  • Combine a small amount of turmeric powder with aloe vera or water to form a paste
  • Apply to the affected area for at least 30 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water.

Why It Works

Turmeric is thought to be a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, and it tends to draw out toxins and secretions to help heal skin. Most research has been on animals, so there is no conclusive evidence that turmeric is beneficial to humans.

Precautions

Turmeric is relatively safe when used topically. In some cases it may cause an allergic reaction in the form of an itchy rash. Take care not to get turmeric on your clothing, as it will stain almost anything.
