Soda Crackers Before Getting Up for Morning Sickness

Have a cracker

Soda crackers are the classic remedy for morning sickness. Pregnant women whose morning sickness remains mild, and who truly find that most of their morning sickness remains in the morning, often get relief from their symptoms by eating soda crackers before getting out of bed. Unfortunately, women with severe, all-day-long morning sickness often need a stronger remedy. If you want to customize your remedy to your particular feelings of nausea, you might want to consult the book No More Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women, by Miriam Erick (Plume, 1993).

Using Soda Crackers to Prevent Morning Sickness

Method

  • Keep a container of crackers next to your bed.
  • Before getting up, and if possible before moving, nibble a soda cracker very slowly. If necessary, have several.
  • Then get up.

Why It Works

Doctors recommend that most people eat several small meals a day, but for pregnant women, that advice is especially important. When a pregnant woman’s stomach is empty, nausea often sets in. Keeping small amounts of food in the stomach at all times can help to prevent morning sickness that is the result of hunger.

Precautions

Soda crackers have no negative side effects, unless you are allergic to wheat, have a gluten sensitivity, or have celiac disease.
