Butter for Minor Burns

Churning butter

Butter is a dairy spread made from churning fresh milk. It is commonly used as a spread on bread products, and is used in many kinds of cooking. Butter is also an old-fashioned folk remedy used to soothe minor burns, but is not recommended. Granny wasn't always right.

Don't put butter on a burn

Method

Contrary to popular opinion, butter is one of the last things that you should put on a burn.

Why It Doesn't Work

Butter traps heat in the skin, making the burn more painful, and does not allow air to reach the damaged area. This lack of air keeps the skin from healing.

Butter and oils in general also trap bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.

Precautions

Do not apply butter to a burn; use cool water or cold compresses instead.
