Magnesium for Kidney Stones

Magnesium production

Magnesium is a strong, lightweight metallic element that is the ninth most abundant on earth, and the fourth most abundant in the human body. It is a necessary dietary mineral, found mostly in the bones, but also in the soft tissues, organs, and blood. Magnesium serves many functions in the body, including keeping the bones strong, maintaining a steady heart beat, maintaining healthy muscle and nerve function, and keeping the immune system functioning properly.

Magnesium for the Prevention of Kidney Stones

Method

  • Make sure you get at least the recommended daily value of magnesium (400 mg) through supplements, diet, or both. Some magnesium-rich foods include leafy green vegetables, nuts, beans, and whole grains.

Why It Works

The mechanism has not been proven, and researchers and doctors have differing opinions on whether magnesium helps prevent kidney stones, or if a magnesium deficiency can cause kidney stones. Enough research exists, however, to show a clear relationship between magnesium and the prevention of this painful condition.

Precautions

Always check with your healthcare provider if you think you may have kidney stones. Too much magnesium can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, very low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and difficulty with breathing. Use the lowest dose that works, and take magnesium with doctor supervision.
