Home Surgery for Ingrown Nails

Ingrown nails (also known medically as Unguis incarnatus) are a common and painful condition in which the edges of a nail (one or both) grow into the nail bed. Ingrown nails can occur on nails of both the hands and the feet, but more commonly affect toes. Ingrown nails cause pain at the nail margins. If infection occurs, there may also be redness, swelling and drainage from the affected area. Wearing poorly fitting footwear is the most common cause of ingrown nails. Cutting the nail improperly (too short or rounded), trauma to the nail or wearing socks or hosiery that is tight fitting can also cause this condition.

Ingrown Nails and Self Surgery

Method

  • Many people ignore ingrown nails until the pain is severe, at which point they opt to “cure” the problem themselves by digging or cutting at the nail themselves.
  • This is not recommended, as further trauma to the nail may result.
  • Infection may also be caused by trying to relieve the pressure by oneself.

Why It Works

Further traumatizing a nail bed that is damaged or infected may result in severe infection, which will cause more pain. Diabetics in particular should never try to cut a nail that is ingrown; they should instead see a professional who is experienced at treating ingrown nails.

Precautions

If a nail shows signs of being infected, a visit to the doctor may be in order. Attempting to pry, lift or cut the nail will likely result in a worse infection. Diabetics should be cautious of any infection in the foot, as they may have decreased circulation and sensation to the toe or foot. Infections in diabetics may lead to fluctuations in blood sugar levels or severe infection requiring hospitalization.
