Goldenseal plant

Goldenseal is an herb in the buttercup family, native to southeast Canada and the northeast United States. It has been used in medicine for at least hundreds of years in both topical and internal use for an amazing array of ailments, including cancer, inflammation, digestive disorders, gallstones, liver disease and hemorrhage.

Goldenseal to Lower Cholesterol

Method

  • In capsule form, take 0.5 to 1 gram by mouth, 3 times daily.

Why It Works

Goldenseal root contains compounds that have been shown to boost the production of LDLR, a protein that draws LDL (bad cholesterol) out of the bloodstream.

Precautions

Do not take goldenseal for longer than 2 weeks at a time, as it can disrupt the absorption of B vitamins. Do not take if you are experiencing chills or gastrointestinal inflammation. Goldenseal is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women. Side effects are relatively rare, but may include nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to sun.
