Hawthorn for High Blood Pressure

Hawthorn is a common flowering shrub native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa. Used predominantly as a hedge, its branches grow so close together that it can keep people out, or livestock in. Hawthorn is also used for medicinal reasons, the leaves are eaten in salads, and the berries are often used in jam, wine, and syrups. In mysticism, hawthorn is said to be deadly to vampires in some cultures, and has other applications in folklore.

Method

  • The leaf and flower are made into extracts, which may be taken orally in capsule form. The usual dose is 300 mg 3 times daily.

Why It Works

Hawthorn is a diuretic, drawing water out of the blood, and also widens the blood vessels, both of which result in a drop in blood pressure.

Precautions

Side effects are usually mild, but may include headache, dizziness, and upset stomach.
