Propolis for Cold Sores

propolis.jpg
propolis

Propolis is a resin collected by bees from tree sap, flower buds, pollen, and even manmade caulk products, and is used to seal small openings in the hive. Propolis is marketed by natural healthcare outlets as an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antifungal, and is also used to treat skin wounds and burns. These health claims are difficult to prove, however, because different hives may use completely different materials in their propolis. Critics question how any distributor can know what is in their propolis, and thus how it will affect humans who use it.

Propolis for the Treatment of Cold Sores

Method

Propolis is available in many over the counter lip balms. Use according to package directions.

Why It Works

Propolis is thought to be an antiviral, which could stop the virus responsible for cold sores. It may also be an antimicrobial, which would help promote the healing of the skin. The anti-inflammatory properties of propolis may help ease the discomfort of cold sores.

Precautions

Because of the nature of propolis, it is difficult to determine the ingredients, and therefore its safety or effectiveness. Propolis may be a strong allergen, so stop use if you show symptoms of allergy. Do not use propolis if you are allergic to bee stings, honey, or poplar trees.
