Melissa officinalis

Lemon balm is an herb in the mint family, native to Europe (though found all over the world.) It has many uses, including a mosquito repellent, a flavoring agent in candy and ice cream, and as a calming herbal tea. Lemon balm is also thought to be an antibacterial, an antifungal, and an antioxidant, and is popular in aromatherapy.

Lemon Balm for the Treatment of Cold Sores

Method

Make a tea by steeping 2-4 teaspoons of crushed lemon balm leaf in 1 cup boiling water for about 15 minutes. Allow the tea to cool, then apply to the sore with a cotton ball several times daily.

Why It Works

Lemon balm contains compounds know as terpenes and tannins, both of which have known antiviral properties. It also contains eugenol, which is an antibacterial and helps to numb the affected tissue, thus easing discomfort.

Precautions

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use lemon balm. Lemon balm may interact with certain medications, including sedatives and some thyroid drugs.
