Sitz Bath for Hemorrhoids

sitz bath
sitz bath

A sitz bath involves sitting in a bath of warm water, immersing only the buttocks and hips.

Take a sitz bath for hemorrhoid relief

Method

You can buy a plastic sitz bath that fits on your toilet at the drugstore.

  • Fill sitz bath with water that is very warm, but not hot enough to burn.
  • Add Epsom salts or baking soda if desired, or even essential oils such as lavender or juniper to ease swelling.
  • Soak for approximately 20 minutes.
  • Gently (but thoroughly) blot the area dry with a clean cotton towel.
  • Repeat 2-3 times daily as needed.
  • Why It Works

A sitz bath works by cleaning the affected area, relaxing the sphincter, and increasing blood flow to the region, promoting faster healing. It also provides almost instant relief of the pain and itching associated with hemorrhoids.

    Precautions

After your sitz bath, get up slowly. The warm water can cause dilation of the blood vessels, which could cause dizziness. Always consult a physician if you experience rectal bleeing or have prolonged and/or frequent periods of hemorrhoids.
