Psyllium for Hemorrhoids

psyllium
Plantago montana

Psyllium is a commonly used soluble fiber supplement, made from the husks of seeds of the plantago plant. It is the main ingredient in many over-the-counter fiber products, such as Metamucil.

Psyllium fiber for hemorrhoid relief

Method

  • If you are using powdered psyllium, you can mix it with water, juice, or other beverages.
  • If you are taking psyllium in the form of chewable tablets or wafers, be sure to drink an eight-ounce glass of water with it.

Why It Works

Hemorrhoids are caused by chronic constipation and by prolonged periods of straining to pass stool. Psyllium is a soluble fiber; it promotes regular bowel movements, and softens stool by drawing water into the stool and holding it there.

Precautions

Any time that you add fiber to your diet, you must also add fluid. Otherwise, fiber supplements can increase rather than decrease constipation. Fluids should be water or juice, not alcohol, coffee, or soda. Try to drink at least six to eight glasses of fluid each day. Always consult a physician if you experience rectal bleeing or have prolonged and/or frequent periods of constipation and/or hemorrhoids.
