For hemorrhoids, the best exercise is a 20 to 30 minute walk. Strenuous exercise may increase blood flow to a degree that makes things worse. Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles are also helpful.

Exercise for hemorrhoid relief

Method

Walk 20 to 30 minutes per day, or choose a different form of exercise that is moderately aerobic.

Kegel exercises are another daily option

  • First, isolate your pelvic floor muscles. These are the muscles you use to stop the flow of urine while urinating. Tighten these muscles slowly while inhaling
  • Try to hold for up to 10 seconds while exhaling.
  • Release.
  • Repeat for five to 15 minutes at a time, twice a day.

Why It Works

Hemorrhoids are caused by chronic constipation and by prolonged periods of straining to pass stool. Exercise stimulates the bowels to move more often. Exercise also improves circulation, improving blood flow to swollen blood vessels.

Precautions

Avoid weight-lifting, which increases pressure on the intra-abdominal area. Instead, focus on aerobic exercise. Always consult a physician if you experience rectal bleeing or have prolonged and/or frequent periods of hemorrhoids.
