Caffeine for Headaches

When it comes to headaches, caffeine is a double-edged sword. Caffeine works so well for treating headaches that it is a common ingredient in headache remedies; in scientific studies it was shown to increase the effectiveness of other pain medications by 40 percent. It is particularly effective for treating migraines, and, of course, for caffeine withdrawal headaches. It works best when taken just as a headache is beginning.

On the other hand, people who consume too much caffeine–the amount in five cups of coffee or more, daily–get 18 percent more headaches than people who keep their caffeine consumption at more moderate levels. Further complicating matters is the fact headaches are symptomatic of caffeine withdrawal.

Method

  • Take a headache medication containing caffeine, or, alternatively, drink a caffeinated beverage, such as coffee, tea, caffeinated sodas, energy drinks, or cocoa.
  • Chocolate is a good dietary source of caffeine as well.
  • Repeat as needed.

Why It Works

Caffeine increases the speed of blood flow through the brain; increased blood flow also speeds the delivery of medications. Caffeine is also a vasoconstrictor – it blocks receptors in the brain that cause blood vessels to dilate, which can cause headaches.

Precautions

Caffeine can cause heart palpitations or a racing heart beat, excessive urination, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and hand tremors. It is also sometimes associated with mental symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, and depression. It can also cause difficulty sleeping if it is taken too late in the evening.
