Method

  • Ingestion: Saw palmetto extract pills are widely available where vitamins and supplements are sold. Take as directed.
  • Topical application: There are several manufacturers of saw palmetto shampoo. You can find them online or at natural foods stores.

Does saw palmetto work?

Because saw palmetto is so effective for treating BPH (enlarged prostate) it is assumed that its influence on testosterone and enzyme production make it a good treatment for hair loss. Propecia and finasteride hair loss medications work in this way.

Precautions

Do not take saw palmetto if you are anemic as it may interfere with iron absoprtion. It may also interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Consult a doctor before taking saw palmetto if you are taking any of the following: finasteride (Proscar), antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs (blood-thinners). If you have a skin reaction to any topical application, discontinue use immediately.
