Food Diary for Gastritis

Keep a food diary

A food diary is a record of everything that you eat, including all meals, beverages, and snacks. You can keep a food diary in a traditional book form, or record in a computer file or calendar. The purpose of keeping a food diary is to help you identify patterns and notice whether there is a connection between ingesting certain substances and experiencing symptoms of gastritis. In addition to keeping track of what you eat, you should also keep track of any physical symptoms that you experience, so that you can see if a pattern emerges. A food diary can be especially helpful if you suspect that your physical symptoms are connected with a food allergy.

Using a Food Diary to Relieve the Symptoms of Gastritis

Method

  • Choose a method for recording your food intake (book, calendar, software, phone memo, etc.).
  • Every time that you eat something, note what you ate or drank, the time and day, and any symptoms that you experienced at around that time.
  • Periodically, review your diary to look for patterns and try to make connections between particular foods and symptoms.

Why It Works

Many people find that their gastritis flare-ups are associated with particular foods. Some even end up identifying foods that they are allergic to, or discovering an underlying condition such as celiac disease.

Precautions

There are no side effects associated with keeping a food diary.
