Trail Runners for Blisters

Blisters are small sacks of fluid between the upper layers of skin. Commonly caused by the rubbing of ill-fitting shoes on the feet, blisters may also be caused by other forms of friction, burns, infection, chemical exposure or freezing. Blisters are usually filled with a clear fluid, though if infected, they may fill with pus.

Trail Runners are “off-road” shoes typically worn by ultralight backpackers and those who run in the wilderness, rather than hike. These shoes do not have as much support as hiking boots, but they generally have reinforced soles and excellent traction, stability and durability. Trail runners are also more affordable than boots.

Trail Runners to Prevent Blisters

Method

  • For best results, purchase trail runners at a shoe store with a fitting expert to make sure your new shoes fit well. Wear trail runners for any activity requiring extensive walking, particularly hiking and backpacking. You may want to use walking poles to compensate for the lack of support that hiking boots provide.

Why It Works

Trail runners are typically waterproof and allow the feet to breathe, which reduces blisters by keeping moisture away from the skin. These shoes also tend to fit more snugly in the heels than boots, reducing friction and preventing blisters.

Precautions

Though some hikers and backpackers are very adamant about the benefits of ditching boots for trail runners, it's the not the best option for everyone. Trail runners are very light weight, and do not have as much padding as boots or other types of shoes. Depending on the shoe and your activity, you may experience bruising and impact shock on your feet. Talk to an expert at the shoe store about your needs, and they should be able to direct you to an appropriate shoe.
