Fatigue is a subjective symptom; in other words, it is not measurable. People suffer fatigue for many different reasons. Illness, stress, overwork and lack of sleep may all contribute to fatigue. Fatigue can affect all aspects of your life, including work, social life and relationships. It is a common symptom that everyone experiences from time to time. It is important to visit your doctor to have your fatigue evaluated if your fatigue started suddenly, continues indefinitely or is associated with other symptoms (i.e. fever, weight loss, depression) that may signal a serious health problem.

If you suffer from fatigue, eating protein in the morning for breakfast may help you combat fatigue throughout the day.

Fatigue and Protein

Method

Try consuming more protein in the morning. Breakfast foods that contain protein include:

  • Kashi cereal
  • Whole wheat toast with peanut butter
  • Eggs
  • Yogurt with added granola
  • Protein shake
  • Milk
  • Cottage cheese with fruit
  • Granola bar

Why It Works

Eating protein in the morning for breakfast helps to keep your blood sugar better regulated throughout the day. By eating protein for breakfast, you will be ensuring that you don’t run out of energy mid-morning and feel tired all day. Our body needs protein to carry out all of our body’s functions, so if you want to feel well with high energy levels, make sure to eat a breakfast that contains some protein.

Precautions

There are very few people who shouldn’t eat high protein diets (i.e. those with kidney disease). Most people will benefit from consuming some protein in the morning.
