James Phillips, 1790

Flax, or linseed, is a plant found in the Mediterranean, India and Egypt, grown for its seeds and its fibers. Flax is used for an incredible array of products, including fabric, dyes, soap, fishing nets, hair gel, paper and medicines, and is also used in paints and cattle feed. The seeds contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, an essential nutrient known to improve heart health.

Flaxseed for the Treatment of Eye Infection

Method

  • Boil 4 oz. water, add 1 oz. of bruised flaxseed and steep for 15 minutes. Strain excess water, place the warm moist flaxseed on a square of cheesecloth, and apply directly to the affected eye. Repeat up to 3 times daily.

Why It Works

Flaxseed reduces inflammation, soothing the pain and irritation in the eye. Flaxseed may also help protect the body from certain infections, though more research is necessary.

Precautions

Make sure anything applied to the eye is sterile. Always remove contact lenses before using the poultice. Eye infections can cause long-term damage, so contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve after 2-3 days. Although topical application of flaxseed is generally regarded as safe, ask your doctor before using flaxseed if you are pregnant, as flaxseed is potentially harmful with extended use.
