Chamomile

Chamomile is a small flowering plant typically used to make tea and known for its sleep-inducing qualities. Fennel seed comes from a small flowering herb native to the Mediterranean and is often used as a spice and in traditional medicine. Marigold is a small flowering plant in the daisy family, generally used as an ornamental plant. Marigold is also useful as an insecticide, an aromatic, and a flavoring agent.

Chamomile, Fennel Seed and Marigold for the Treatment of Eye Infection

Method

  • Boil 4 cups of marigold leaves for 10 minutes, then let stand for 20 minutes. Make a patty out of the leaves and apply to the affected eye for about 30 minutes before bed.
  • Blend 1 cup water and 1 cup fennel seeds to make a paste. Freeze for 5 hours, then apply to the affected eye for 30 minutes first thing in the morning. Rinse the eye thoroughly after removing the paste.
  • Boil 3 cups of chamomile flower in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, cool, and strain into a sterile container. With clean hands, wash the affected eye with the chamomile water 3 times daily.
  • Alternatively, mix equal parts marigold leaves, fennel seeds and chamomile, then steep 1 tsp of the mixture in 1 cup boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Strain and cool, then soak sterile cotton balls or gauze in the solution and apply to the closed eye for 10 minutes, 3-4 times daily.

Why It Works

Marigold contains antibacterial compounds called luteins, which help to eliminate the bacteria responsible for the infection. Fennel seeds contain an antimicrobial agent which also helps to clear up the infection, and they reduce inflammation and pain. Chamomile effectively cleanses and soothes the eye, reducing pain and itching.

Precautions

Make sure anything applied to the eye is sterile. Always remove contact lenses before using these remedies. Eye infections can cause long-term damage, so contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve after 2-3 days. Stop use of all treatments if allergic reaction occurs.
