Breathe to relieve Dizziness

Breathe!

Dizziness is a symptom that may occur at any time, and you may not have any home remedies available. Deep breathing, however, is something you can always do, and it usually helps. Deep breathing means breathing more slowly and taking in more air with each breath. A normal breath rate for most people is about 15 to 18 breaths per minute. Deep breathing reduces your breathing rate to about four to eight breaths per minute. Deep breathing calms the nerves and reduces stress, which may contribute to dizziness.

Breathe to relieve dizziness

Method

  • Count to five slowly, in your head, as you inhale, and count to five again, slowly, as you exhale.
  • Try imagining a spot just below your naval. Then slowly breathe into this spot, trying to fill your belly with air.

Why It Works

Poor breathing can be a cause of dizziness, as it can reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches your brain or disrupt the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood. If your dizziness is caused by poor breathing, learning to breathe more fully should resolve the problem. Deep breathing reduces the heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure; makes oxygen more available to the brain; and relaxes the nervous system.

Precautions

Treating dizziness yourself makes sense if you know why you are dizzy (if, for example, you have an ear infection or flu, you are pregnant and experiencing morning sickness, you have motion sickness, your blood sugar is low because you have not eaten in several hours, your blood pressure is low because you stood up suddenly or have been on your feet a long time, or you are fatigued and/or dehydrated from overexertion). If you do not know why you are dizzy, and you are experiencing regular, frequent dizziness, you should see a doctor.

When you treat dizziness with deep breathing, make sure that you breathe slowly and easily. Don’t breathe rapidly, as you might hyperventilate.
