Agrimonia eupatoria

Agrimony is part of the rose family, and is native to Europe. It is a plant with tiny yellow flowers that look like church steeples. It is sometimes called church steeple, burr marigold, cocklebur, or white tansy. Agrimony has been used to treat diarrhea since ancient times. It was a soldier’s remedy, not only useful for diarrhea, but also for treating wounds and for inducing sleep. The ancient Greeks used it for diarrhea. Modern research has confirmed that agrimony is an anti-inflammatory.

Agrimony home remedy for diarrhea

Method

  • Infuse one to two teaspoons of dried agrimony in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Cool, and strain.
  • Take one to three times per day.
  • Alternatively, take 10-60 drops of agrimony extract.

Why It Works

Agrimony is high in tannins, which have an astringent effect. Agrimony’s tannins are believed to reduce inflammation in the intestines. Some studies also show that agrimony has a mild antiseptic effect against bacteria in the intestines.

Precautions

Agrimony has few side effects and is generally considered safe. However, it does cause a photo dermatitis rash in people who are sensitive to it. In this kind of rash, a person takes the herb, and then develops a rash after exposing skin to sunlight. Also, some studies have shown that agrimony lowers blood pressure, so it should not be used by people who are taking medication for blood pressure. Because it helps blood to coagulate, agrimony should not be taken by people who are taking anti-coagulant drugs. It is not recommended for use by pregnant women. Always consult a doctor if you have diarrhea that lasts more than a day or is extremely painful.
