Some popular uses for ginseng include boosting the immune system, lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, and improving mental and physical stamina.

Ginseng for help with type 2 diabetes

Method

The root is dried and ground into powder, then put into capsules and taken orally. Take according to package directions.

Why It Works

Ginseng has been shown in limited research to improve insulin response. There has not yet been sufficient research to determine the effect, if any, of ginseng on insulin response. The American Diabetes published a review of studies related to herbal treatments for diabetes that can be read here.

Precautions

Side effects are relatively uncommon, but may include sleeplessness, nausea, diarrhea, breast pain, headaches, nosebleed, and uncontrolled blood pressure. Ginseng should not be taken for longer than 3 months at a time due to the potential for developing side effects. If taking medication to lower blood sugar, ginseng may cause a potential unsafe drop in glucose levels. ALWAYS talk to your doctor before beginning a ginseng regimen for your diabetes. Ginseng has not been shown to benefit those with Type 1 diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes and home remedies should not be relied upon to manage diabetes.
