Cinnamon for Diabetes

The spice known as cinnamon is actually the bark of cinnamomum burmanni, a plant native to Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Cinnamon predates recorded history, and has been used in Europe, Asia, and Egypt for thousands of years. Used mainly in baking and spiced beverages, cinnamon is also known for its health benefits, including enhancing brain function, helping control blood sugar and improving colon health.

Cinnamon for help with type 2 diabetes

Method

Cinnamon may be made into tea, taken as a supplement in capsule form, or sprinkled into many different foods. As little as ½ teaspoon of cinnamon daily has been shown to be beneficial. Heating the spice does not alter its effectiveness.

Why It Works

A chemical in cinnamon called MHCP has been shown in some clinical studies to improve the body’s response to insulin up to 50%. However, a 2007 survey of existing studies, published here on the ADA site, found cinnamon to have no effect.

Precautions

If you use cinnamon extract capsules, look for an extract called Cinnalin PF which does not contain coumarin, a potential liver toxin found in some cinnamon extracts. Cinnamon may interact with certain drugs, including blood thinners, and may cause extensive problems in those who have reduced kidney function. ALWAYS check with your doctor before taking cinnamon for diabetes. Cinnamon has not been shown to benefit those with Type 1 diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes and home remedies should not be relied upon to manage diabetes.
