Yoga for Depression and Anxiety

Work it out with yoga

Yoga is an ancient Indian custom, mixing meditation and exercise into one relaxing mind-body experience. There are many forms of yoga, which can differ according to the religious background, the geographic region, or the Yogi whom the practitioners follow, but the basic non-religious goal is a sense of peace and well-being.

Yoga to Relieve Stress and Depression

Method

Yoga does not have to involve expensive classes and equipment. There is a wealth of free information on the internet on yoga positions and exercise programs, and DVDs are an inexpensive way to get the benefits of a live teacher, without the cost of classes. All you really need to start is a mat and some snug-fitting clothes with plenty of stretch. It can be difficult to achieve the proper focus without training, however, so consider taking some classes to get you started.

Why It Works

As you tense and relax your muscles in the different postures, you learn to recognize tension in your muscles during your regular daily activities, and will be more able to let that tension go and relax. The deep breathing exercises have a calming effect, and the stretching and holding of postures release endorphins in your brain, which can block pain (both physical and emotional.)

Precautions

Depression and anxiety can be serious medical problems. Yoga is not meant to replace proper medical care. Always talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise regimen.
