Sulfur for Dandruff

sulfur.jpg
Spiritus sulfur

Sulfur is a chemical element and a mineral that can be found in the clay near hot springs and volcanic craters. It has an easily recognizable “rotten egg” smell. The body breaks sulfur down into methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a substance which is important for the health of the integumentary system (which includes the skin and joints). Mineral baths containing sulfur are often used to treat skin disorders (such as eczema, proriasis, warts, and dandruff), and arthritis.

Using Sulfur to Prevent Dandruff

Method

  • Eat foods that are rich in sulfur. High-protein foods such as eggs, meat, and beans contain a lot of sulfur. So do certain herbs and vegetables, such as garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and kale.
  • Dissolve one or two ounces of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) or potassium sulfate in a full tub of water, and soak for at least 30 minutes, keeping as much as the head immersed as you can. Repeat as necessary.

Why It Works

Some studies show that sulfur baths have an anti-inflammatory effect on skin cells. Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) is a common ingredient in dandruff shampoos.

Precautions

There are no known side effects associated with eating foods that are high in sulfur or taking sulfur baths.
