Psyllium fiber is the most popular bulk fiber laxative. There are hundreds of species of the plantago genus, all of which produce copious amounts of seeds that are used for their fiber and mucilage.

Psyllium fiber remedy for constipation

Method

  • Psyllium fiber is readily available in most U.S. drugstores and even grocery stores (Metamucil is a popular brand). Take only as directed. Psyllium works because it is not digestible and it swells up in water; taking too much could result in serious complications.

Why agent works

Psyllium fiber, the husk of the psyllium seed, is a non-digestible fiber that absorbs water and adds bulk to stool, encouraging it to pass. It has no nutritional value.

Precautions

Always take psyllium fiber with plenty of water and continue to drink water throughout the day. Psyllium may interfere with absorption of other medications so always take it several hours before and after taking other medications. Do not take psyllium fiber if you have trouble swallowing. If you have kidney disease, consult with your doctor before taking psyllium fiber.
