Lemon Juice for Brightening Hair

Citrus limon

Lemon juice is probably the most popular home remedy for brightening and adding highlights to blonde hair. However, not everyone finds lemon juice to be effective; it seems to work differently for different people. The lighter your hair is already, the more effective lemon juice is likely to be.

How to brighten hair with lemon

Method

  • Work a mixture of lemon juice and water (more water than lemon juice) evenly into hair, spend an hour in the sun, rinse, and repeat as often as desired. Or put lemon juice and water in a spray bottle, and spray your hair before going out in the sun.
  • Alternatively, use the following recipe to reduce the drying effect of the lemon juice: 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Why It Works

Lemon juice and sunlight work together to bleach the hair.

Precautions

Lemon juice is very acidic and can damage your hair, making it brittle. Always dilute lemon juice with at least an equal amount of water, and do not stay out in the sun with lemon juice in your hair for more than an hour. Also, beware that lemon juice can cause chemically treated hair to turn orange.
