Chamomile for Brightening Hair

chamomile.jpg
Chamomile

Chamomile is one of the best known and most widely used herbal remedies in the world. But it is also used in several homemade beauty products, including hair brighteners. Some people say that chamomile will lighten hair, but others say it only brings out natural highlights that were already there. As with lemon juice and other natural hair lighteners, each person’s mileage is likely to vary—results may be different for different people. Chamomile tea made from dried chamomile can be used as a hair brightener, but it is more effective to make tea using fresh chamomile flowers.

Method

  • Make a chamomile cream rinse from chamomile tea (steeped for at least 15 minutes), ¼ teaspoon of lavender oil, and one cup of yogurt. Coat hair completely, cover with a shower cap, and leave on for 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
  • Mix chamomile tea with baby shampoo and use it to wash your hair every day.
  • Soak 1/3 cup of chamomile flowers in 1/3 cup of olive oil, leave the mixture in direct sunlight for two weeks, shaking the jar once a day, and then apply to hair. Leave in for ten minutes, and then rinse.

Why It Works

It is not clear why chamomile can brighten hair. Some people think that the hair takes on the yellow color of the chamomile flowers.

Precautions

Although chamomile is safe for most people, a few have had allergic reactions to it, including a skin rash, throat swelling, shortness of breath, and anaphylaxis. An allergic reaction is most likely if you are allergic to members of the daisy family. If you notice a rash or runny nose, stop using chamomile.
