Cream of Tartar for Bladder Infection (Cystitis)

Potassium bitartrate

Cream of Tartar, or potassium hydrogen tartrate, is an acid salt used in cooking, primarily in baking and stiffening egg whites. Formed as a sediment by-product of grapes during wine making, cream of tartar can also be used as a household cleaner, and is an ingredient in Play-Doh.

Cream of Tartar for Relief of Bladder Infection

  • Mix 1 tablespoon cream of tartar into a glass of water and drink once daily, or mix 1 tablespoon cream of tartar with equal parts lemon (or lime) juice and water, and drink once daily.

Why It Works

Because the bacteria that cause bladder infection thrive in an alkaline environment, this remedy may work by acidifying the urine, which slows the growth of the bacteria. There is not much research showing this, however, but anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that it may work.

Please contact your healthcare provider right away if you suspect you have a bladder infection. Antibiotics may be necessary to prevent the infection from worsening or spreading.
