Ice for Bee Sting

Ice is perhaps the most effective home remedy for bee stings.

Ice as a bee sting remedy

Many people believe that you must be very careful not to squeeze the venom sack when removing a bee sting. This is not supported by research. The most important thing is to remove the stinger as quickly as possible by any means. Be careful not to break the stinger and leave it buried in the skin.

Method

  • Remove stinger as soon as possible. A tweezers or something like a credit card that can be used to scrape out the stinger are good tools; a deft pair of fingers may work as well.
  • Treat wound with antibiotic if available.
  • Apply ice directly to bee sting wound for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Why ice works

Ice cools the skin and numbs the pain. It also slows blood flow to the cold area which reduces swelling.

Precautions

Ice should not be directly applied to skin for more than 20 minutes at a time. Take a 15 minute break bewtween applications.
