Flossing for Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, may be caused by a variety of factors. The offensive odor may be caused by certain foods, such as onions or garlic, bacteria living in the mouth and between the teeth, dry mouth, tobacco use, or another underlying condition. For this reason, there are a variety of treatment options, depending on what is causing the odor.

Floss to prevent bad breath

Method

Insert floss between the teeth and remove food particles, using an up and down motion. Make sure to gently push the floss up between the gums and teeth, not just between the teeth. Use twice a day or as directed by your dentist.

Why It Works

Floss removes food from between your teeth before it can decay and leave odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. While it won't work if your bad breath is the result of some other factor, it will remove one potential source of odor.

Precautions

Do not force floss up under the gum line, as this may lead to pain and bleeding.
