Direct Heat for Back Pain

Heat Treatment

Research suggests that around 80% of people experience back pain at some time in their lives. Types of pain vary by location (upper, middle, and lower back pain) and by cause. Some causes of back pain include arthritis, muscle or nerve problems, degenerative disc disorders, and injury. While pain medications are often the first choice to relieve back pain, knowing the cause of the pain can help determine the most effective options for pain management and relief.

Direct Heat to Relieve Back Pain

Method

  • Heat may be applied in many different ways. An electric heating pad is convenient but only provides dry heat. Moist heat may penetrate the muscles more effectively, and can be applied using a hot water bottle, a heat wrap, or a heat gel pack. Depending on the type and severity of your pain, you will want to apply heat for anywhere between 15 minutes to 2 hours or more. Talk to your healthcare provider about what may work best for you.

Why It Works

Heat increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the muscles, promoting healing, and blocks pain signals to the brain by stimulating sensory nerves in the skin. Heat also increases flexibility and decreases stiffness by allowing the muscles and connective tissues around the spine to stretch.

Precautions

Make sure your heat is warm, not hot. Using too high heat will burn the skin and will not provide additional benefit. Please consult your healthcare provider about your back pain, as it could indicate a severe medical problem. Your doctor can also recommend the best course of action when treating your pain with heat.
