The symptoms you describe, moist, red, irritated skin with burning and unpleasant odor are consistent with a yeast infection, but they could also be an indication of a bacterial infection as well.

If the symptoms are mild you may be able to treat this at home. If these measures do not resolve the problem then I'd recommend seeing medical attention. Be sure to see a healthcare professional if any of the following symptoms are present: fever greater than 101 degrees, black tissue, the redness is expanding over time, or there is extreme pain at the site of infection.

If this is indeed a yeast infection, use of an over the counter anti-fungal medication would be advised. In addition, you will want to take measures to prevent a recurrance of the infection. Yeast infections such as athlete's foot occur when the skin is left moist or wet and can't dry out. This can occur in skin folds such as between toes, at the junction of joints, or even under the breasts in large-chested women. They occur because the areas are not exposed to air and can not dry out properly. You will want to make sure you dry yourself completely after showers. Also wash any clothing you have worn while having this infection in hot water and drying them in the drying machine to prevent reinfection. Wear breathable clothing made from fibers that allow airflow such as cotton.

If you want to try some natural remedies some people have had success with tea tree oil applied topically. Rubbing garlic on the area may also work but with the downside of being smelly. You could also rinse the area with vinegar diluted in water - again probably a smelly solution.

If none of these measures work, it may be a bacterial infeciton or something more serious. In that case seek medical attention.
