Believe it or not, coughing

Believe it or not, coughing is a healthy, beneficial physiological reaction to a respiratory infection. It helps clear the lungs of excessive mucous and also helps clear out bacteria or viruses. I would only ever recommend a cough suppressant if the coughing is interfering with sleep so much that a person can't recover. Or, if a person is going to do some sort of speaking engagement and the cough could interfere with the presentation. Otherwise, it is best to allow the coughing to continue.

You can also check out our pages here on GrannyMed.com related to Bronchitis, cough and phlegm for various home treatments such as ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and chocolate, among others.

If your mom doesn't get better within 5 to 7 days, or she develops a fever over 101 degrees, or she exhibits any signs of mental decline, be sure to seek immediate medical attention. I would also recommend that she be monitored by her regular healthcare professional to ensure that the bronchitis doesn't develop into pneumonia.
