I have worked on lots of patients that have old fractures in their spine. There is much to gain for your husband in seeing a chiropractor. Don't plaster the problem with drugs go to the source maximize his spinal health with chiropractic...then you will know what you are working with. the spine when injured can exaggerate pain impulses if the neural interferences are impeded. TRY IT if you have not. You will be amazed at what we can do

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's misfortune. Truly broken backs and the pain that accompanies them are some of the most devestating injuries. Their long lasting chronic pain can affect daily living.

It may be hard to hear, but some amount of pain may always be present after an injury such as breaking a back. It is important to find ways to support a person who has sustained this injury to function as normally as possible while accepting the reality that they may have pain for a very long time. The reason I mention this is because I have seen many a patient seek complete relief from pain instead of accepting what is and moving forward and in this constant seeking experience many problems including strained relationships, dependence on painkillers, and depression.

Of course, it is always a good thing to look for ways to decrease the pain as much as possible! I think you are on the right track with heat and cold compresses. I would also consider massage therapy with someone who specialized in back injuries. The therapist must be aware of this injury and trained properly to work with it so as not to aggrivate it. In addition, physical therapy or working with a trainer to strengthen the muscles that support the spine, espeically accessory muscles, will provide long-term stability and decrease pain.

You can also apply topical muscle creams. These contain menthol and often times methyl salicylate which is derived from wintergreen. Never occlude the area after application of this cream and never apply heat either.

Keeping your husband moving as much as possible will be important going forward. If all else fails, seek a consultation with a pain specialist.

Pain is one of the most difficult things to treat. I really wish there was a magic bullet I could tell you about but you will most likely need to try many things before you find a combination that works best for your husband. Hopefully he find methods to modulate the pain, accept the pain that isn't modifiable, and have the wisdom to know the difference.
