Please note that I am not a physician and cannot diagnose any medical condition. What I can say is that a fever is usually a sign that the body is fighting an infection. It can also be a reaction to drugs or caused by other problems in the nervous system that regulate body temperature. In any case, it is not normal to be running a continuous low grade fever like you are describing.

In your father's case, it could be due to a variety of factors. The most likely would be that his body is having some sort of reaction to the knee replacement he had last month. The body may not recognize the foreign materials inserted into his knee and be trying to fight them with an immune reaction. In other words, his body could be rejecting the foreign material. On the other hand, there could be a low grade infection growing on the foreign material such as caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. This would need to be treated with antibiotics. What other symptoms is he having? Any chills, sweating, or shaking? Other symptoms could provide clues as to the origin of the fever and point to an appropriate treatment plan.

Finally, although unlikely, the fever could be caused by an unrelated reason, such as a malignancy. The most important thing to understand is that a continuous fever is not normal and it is important to determine the underlying cause for the fever before a specific treatment recommendation can be made. Perhaps it is time for a second opinion of your father's original doctor is not taking appropriate action regarding this fever.

Dear Surinder Tandon, My

Dear Surinder Tandon,

My mother is having the same problem. After having knee surgery, her fever is not coming down. She gets fever every day in the evening. Though her knee recovery seems to be going ok, the fever is making her feel very weak. We got blood tests done. There was urine infection in the reports. Four weeks later, seconds blood tests report no urine infection. In fact all reports are ok.

Fever is causing her a lot of weakness and concern. She is depressed about fever not going away.

Would you please share with me if your father is feeling any better and what treatment helped.

Also what specialist you saw ?

My mother is in Chandigarh. She had the surgery 6 weeks ago.

Regards,
Guddi
