It sounds like you have an upper respiratory infection which could be something like a cold or the flu, caused either by a bacteria or virus.

Regardless of what you have, if you have a fever that is over 104, or that persists for longer than 5 days, go see your doctor. It will be important to remain hydrated while you are sick, so be sure to be drinking fluids regularly.

Usually our immune systems can handle most minor illnesses like a cold and it just takes time for things to clear up. Of course, there are various cold and cough preparations available over-the-counter to help you while you are ailing. In all honesty, however, those that are supposed cough suppressants aren't that effective.

If your cough is so troublesome that you can't sleep, it may be time to visit your doctor for a prescription strength medication. The best thing to do is to get plenty of rest, vitamins, and fluids to support your body in healing itself.
